<May 6, 2006
<New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art announced on March 22, 2006 that Geneva, Switzerland is home to its new overseas office. The facility's first Director for International Affairs is Dr. Mahrukh Tarapor. She will also continue to be The Metropolitan Museum's dynamic Associate Director for Exhibitions, a position she has held for the last 11 years.
<Geneva's geographical proximity to Europe, the Middle East and Asia made the Swiss city an ideal location for The Met's new international outpost. Often due to the efforts of Dr. Tarapor, many of the surrounding region's countries have contributed rare art objects to the prestigious American art institution for international loan exhibitions. (Syria is a notable exception. It sadly sent a mere handful of numerous objects promised to The Met for its landmark special exhibition on Mesopotamian art in 2003. Those that were not on display are documented in the show's comprehensive catalogue.)
